The World has suddenly had to adapt to the new way of working, and for many Microsoft Teams has become the norm for meetings of all types.

Microsoft Teams is the number one unified communication tool, designed to help the way businesses communicate effectively.

One of the latest features that Microsoft has introduced to Teams Video-Calls is the ability for users to customise their backgrounds in virtual meetings, as a way to protect privacy and, in some case to help reinforce company branding.

Here is how…

  1. Start or join a Teams video meeting using the app’ on your device. You will see a bar appear near the bottom of the screen whenever you hover over that area. Click on the three dots, also known as “More Options”.
More Options — click on the three dots.

The menu will display several options, but you will need to select “Show Background Effects”. Now, it is time to choose your background. You have the choice from the various default background images provided by Microsoft and these options will appear on the right side of your screen.

2. Some of the images are very businesslike to make it feel like you are back in the office, or why not be creative with a background image from a game like Minecraft!

If you prefer to keep it simple, you can always choose to merely blur out the background, an effective way to focus the attention on the meeting rather than your surroundings.

Top Tip: You can preview the background image before applying it. Click on your ideal background and select “Preview” at the bottom of the screen. If you are happy with your choice, select “Apply and turn on video”.

3. You can even upload your very own background too! Click on “Add New” and select the image you would like from your files, then proceed to select “Open”.

Top Tip: For best results use an image resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels and keep the image to around 1Mb in size.

Upload Your Own Background — click on “Add New”.

Top Tip: Even though you might see the image reversed in your own view, for others in the meeting the image will appear normally. This is because the default view for yourself in Teams is set to act like a mirror.
